Luther Malakai’s father was a sadistic monster who liked to beat his son a lot. A father’s duty was to correct his children, the ol’ man figured, and the wicked boy in his own home would be no exception. The sight of his alcoholic father unbuckling his belt or fetching another stick always made Luther’s stomach turn with fear. When he turned fourteen he began to push back, a rebellious and futile act that only made his father hit him even harder.

On a sleepless night, during one of his parents’ many fights, Luther grabbed a large piece of firewood from the dirty floor and entered their bedroom. Despising his mother, a tiefling’s daughter whom Luther considered no better than a common whore, he killed her with a single blow to her head. His father, once a powerful miner but now a staggering drunk, still held his old sledgehammer in both hands when Luther landed on him in a sudden fury that he had never felt before. Overwhelmed by the awakening hellspawn within, Luther literally tore the older man’s arm off and murdered his father with his bare hands.

After gathering his few possessions, including the sledgehammer, Luther torched the ramshackle house and watched as it slowly burned to the ground. He stayed up all night, frightened yet fascinated and curiously drawn to the fire. He sensed its destructive power and listened to the roaring flames. It was as if he heard voices speaking to him, and for the first time he felt great peace in his heart. Rejuvenated, he left Daggerford in the morning and headed out into the wilderness. He eventually made his way to Loudwater where he soon found a new life on the streets.

Three years later, Luther’s speed and ability to withstand a savage beating, have earned him a reputation as one of the youngest and most ferocious prizefighters in town. Frank Hamstring, an aging promotor, soon discovered the young talent and took him under his wings. A petty criminal with strong connections in Loudwater’s underworld, Frank is a grumpy old fart who likes to ramble on about the old days, when life was hard and you really had to be tough to stay alive. Still, he is the closest to a real parent that Luther has ever had and his advice on life, to take what you want and never apologize, has stuck.

Besides Frank, Luther cares for no one but himself and fights for the sheer thrill of defeating his opponents as much as for the money. He is crude and bad-mannered, inside as well as outside the ring. Brawny and rather short, he has been nicknamed “The Beast from Daggerford” by the crowd, even though few would dare to say it to his face.
