Simon grew up as a privileged fourth child in a wealthy family in Riddleport. The family had made their name and money in the boat building industry, Thorn Boatyard and Wharfs. As the fourth child Simon was not needed in the family business per se, and was left to do more or less what he wanted. When his father Percival noticed Simon's magical lineage, he was more than pleased to support that development. In the cut-throat business of Riddleport, brute force is a more than probable outcome of negotiations and a powerful player can usually sway the game in their favour.
Simon's powers started manifesting as he hit puberty. He had lived a rather sheltered life and had seen little of the harsh life on the streets of Riddleport. He had been imprinted with the view that the strong and ruthless prevails. You make your mark in life by climbing on the back's of others. As Simon's studies took him out and about in the city Simon's eyes were opened to the misery that constitutes most peoples lives. He was shocked to see the complete lack of empathy amongst the inhabitants. When broaching the subject at a family dinner, suggesting that the family could use some of its considerable fortune to start a shelter or a soup kitchen, he was scolded by his father for a good hour after which he received a good beating as to emphasise the sheer folly of this idea. What Simon took from this lesson was rather to keep his true feelings and empathy to himself, rather than discarding them altogether.
In the coming years Simon did what charity work he could without raising any suspicion from his family. When his father died Simon was 35 years of age and a fairly prominent magician in Riddleport. He received his fair share of the family business along with his siblings. Simon signed over his part of the company to the Church of Sarenrae, a move that got him banished from the family for good.
