Background

“You gonna do something? Or are you just gonna stand there and bleed?”

Harlan Hess grew up dirt-poor on a hog farm in Carrion Hill, a place he literally fled as a boy for reasons best left unexplained. Fifteen years old and cursed with a disfigured face that already had brought him nothing but trouble, he ran away from home to join a traveling circus. As their scout, he was paid to provide fresh game for the crew and find the best routes to go. The circus finally reached Kaer Maga where Harlan, after a fight with the manager about money, quit and went looking for another job.

On the brink of starvation and begging for something to eat, he was spotted by a priest who took pity on the young man and offered him a position within his church. Hess was too hungry not to accept, but as time dragged on he slowly began to enjoy his new life as a faithful servant. He became a caretaker in the service of Pharasma, the Lady of Graves. Stationed at the Godsmouth Cathedral, his main chore was to escort pilgrims and other devotees through the wilderness along the Yondabakari River and ensure their safe arrival in the city.

Bored and restless after years of service, Harlan suddenly gave up his duties and decided to leave town with a band of adventurers. They were heading west. They needed someone to take them there, and Harlan had always wanted to see the ocean. After a violent incident in Ravenmoor, an isolated village in central Varisia, the party split up and was scattered to the four winds.

Harlan continued west towards the coast. A few days later he arrived in the frontier town of Riddleport. He soon found himself lost in the Rotgut district, the poorest and most unsavory part of the city. Reluctantly, as he was trying to leave the place, he realized that his presence and obvious background in the Pharasmin clergy somehow seemed an unexpected but welcome comfort to many of the whores, beggars, and other outcasts who called this slum home. Helping them bury their dead came naturally. He did the digging while they cried. Always dressed in his old ceremonial garments, he quickly became known as the “preacher”.

Most of these wretched creatures were either too sick or too busy trying to stay alive to pick on his own repulsiveness for a change. With nothing better to do, Harlan decided to stay awhile. He now works as a courier between Riddleport and its holdings in Roderic’s Cove. A loner by nature, he is often hired to patrol the surrounding wilderness by himself, spending weeks on end looking for the occasional orc or hill giant that sometimes prey upon remote farms in the area.

Harlan was born an albino with white hair and red eyes. Pale as a ghost with bad teeth and a hideous scar splitting his lips, he is unsettling to look at. His solemn manner and grim appearance, the result of a collapsing saw blade at the village mill, put most people off. He wears a torn clergyman’s outfit adorned with a single black rose, the Pharasmin symbol of good luck. He is rarely seen without his longbow. A spiky warhammer with a lean wooden handle is always tucked in his belt, as well as a crude-looking sickle.

A simple farm boy from Ustalav, Harlan was more or less raised in his father’s pigsty. He has a soft spot for livestock and animals in general, especially those who suffer at the hands of abusive owners. As long as he can remember, bullies have always made his blood run cold. He cannot stand children (“Stop gawking, you little bastards!”), and speaking to any attractive girl or woman usually leaves him stuttering or hiding his ugly face in shame.
