Background

“Hello. My name is Elasar Alazario. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

Elasar grew up on the backstreets of Old Korvosa. His mother, a poor hardworking midwife, died of pneumonia when he was just a child. He never knew his father, a drunken sailor on shore leave who abandoned his young family and was later found drowned, floating facedown in the harbor. Elasar was six years old when he watched his mother being carried away.

Alone and hungry, begging for something to eat, Elasar was approached by a man calling himself Gaedren Lamm. Lamm promised him food and shelter and said there was even more good to come. He dragged the boy to an abandoned warehouse in the northern part of Old Korvosa. Inside there were about twenty other children, vowing carpets and working for Lamm and his brutal companions who treated the children no better than slaves. The place was nothing but a prison, with rotten food and terrible living conditions. Fever and other diseases spread like wildfire and many of the children died. Those few who dared to complain simply vanished.

Elasar was taught how to pick pockets and steal for Lamm, but the greedy man always kept the loot for himself and would never split with anyone. When Elasar was eight years old, after almost two years of imprisonment, he managed to get hold of an ivory statuette. The angel-like figurine reminded him of his mother and he decided to keep it for himself. Unfortunately, his envious roommates found out and ratted on him. To set an example for the other children, Lamm had Elasar savagely beaten, even using a hot blade on his body, before leaving him for dead in an alley by the docks. Elasar, older and tougher than most eight-year-olds, was too angry to just lie down and die. Instead, he kept still and slowly regained conscience, weeping silently.

A retired sea captain found Elasar the next morning. The child reminded the sailor of something and he took pity in the poor boy. For the next seven years he gave Elasar a home, kept him fed, told him wonderful stories about adventures on the high seas and, sometimes in the afternoons, he would teach him how to use the rapier and fight like a gentleman. They were good times and Elasar dared to think of the future again.

Tragically, the old man was lethally injured when he was hit by a crossbow bolt, fired from a dark street corner by an unseen attacker. He passed away on Elasar’s fifthteenth birthday. On his deathbed, he confessed that he was Elasar’s real father, that he regretted the wrongs he had done in the past, and that all he wanted was forgiveness. Heartbroken and determined to avenge his father’s death, Elasar went back to the streets again. The killer remained unknown, but to Elasar the murder could be nothing but the spiteful deed of Gaedren Lamm.

Ten years later, Elasar looks pale and skinny. Always dressed in gray rags, he has the appearance of a tattered scarecrow. He is a somber-looking man with intense blue eyes who usually gets unnoticed even in a small crowd of people. He keeps a low profile and prefers to linger in the background, watching and studying before he makes his move.

Branded for life by Gaedren Lamm and with the hideous scars still covering his chest, Elasar rarely takes his shirt off. He works as a courier for Korvosa’s many merchants, often using the shorter but dangerous routes across the city rooftops to deliver his messages or goods.
