Significant past events

George was orphaned at the age of 5. His family of coastal traders were attacked by pirates. Not only did they take the cargo, but they tied the parents to the mast and set the small ship ablaze. The pirates aimed to take the three children as slaves, but George managed to flee into the water, getting away in the dusk that was falling over the scene. The last thing George saw and heard from his family before drifting away into the darkness, was his parents clothes catching fire and their horrifying screams.

George made it back to the shore where he collapsed. He was found by the recluse witch Petulia. At first it was mostly a situation where Petulia let George hang around. He was allowed to sleep in the chicken coop and if she had food to spare, she fed him. To get by he returned to his home town every once in a while to steal food and clothes. Over the years George picked up a few of Petulia's tricks. When she noticed she started to train him and included him in her business.
